Zero in on a Blind Spot: The Gun Powder Factory in Düneberg - Tracking history

auf deutsch hier                                             lo mismo en español

During one of the regular walks organized by the circle for the promotion of an industry museum in Geesthacht, my home town, Förderkreises für ein Industriemuseum Geesthacht, I learnt a lot about the history of the gun powder factory in Düneberg, a neighborhood in Geesthacht. It was very interesting. I flew in from Barcelona for the purpose of participating in the event. The title was "German Gun Powder for the World".

In the last few years several events had made it clear to me that the gun powder factory was a blind spot in my life and that it would be advisable to find out more about it. I have the feeling that during the weekend of my visit I delved into deep roots of my life which give me strength and resistence and food for my spirit and my soul. While these roots were stuck in oblivion, they emanated emotions like shame, fear, anger and guilt. It was only when I managed to let go a bit of the fist in my stomach that has been holding on tightly since my early childhood, that it became possible to name those emotions, to question them, and to discover tracks leading back to the context of their origin. They would often come up without any apparent reason or would be set off  by circumstances that did not match the intensity of their onslaught. They belonged to a pattern that repeated itself again and again, with a negative impact on my health and wellbeing and making life difficult both in the work place and at home. The work with the patterns in my body revealed tracks that led me to the site of the gun powder factory, when I found out that my grandfather had been an officer of the guard there during WWII. From his behavior in later years it became clear that he had not been able to assimilate whatever it must have been like to fulfill that function. He repressed those feelings and I absorbed them on our walks directly body to body, mind to mind, automatically, without being aware of it, because that is human nature.

The offical walk during that morning, 55 years later, was about the buildings that are still standing and others that do not exist any longer.

Here I have a memory of my own life: on this yard I received my first kiss of romantic love from a guy called Carlos, who I cannot remember anything else about, other than his beautiful brown eyes and dark curly hair and that he was Spanish. The buildings housed a part of the offices of the factory. I didn't know that until the day of the walk. I had also learnt only in recent years from a history book I inherited  from my father that the high school I went to had been a company store for the factory workers.

The guide, Jochen Meder, told us many things about all those buildings, those still standing and those that are no longer there, about production procedures and many other things. This building had something to do with energy generation and after the war it was a center where scrap metal was collected as repair payment to England. Now it houses a café with an arts and crafts gallery. In the context of the upcoming 800th anniversay of Geesthacht and the Alfred Nobel Days in December 2016 I will give a talk there about how to recognize the tracks of history in one's own body and how to learn from them to treat oneself and others lovingly, to protect and care for one's own health as well as that of our successors and nature in general, how to engage, within the limits of our possibilities, in tending the wounds that our predecessors left open... in all, to create a satisfactory and happy life.

The perl, this building housed the high ranking administration and the living quarters of the director and his familiy. In the 70s, when I had already left Geesthacht, a community of artists moved in.

In the afternoon, the president of the circle, Ulrike Neidhöfer, took me on a second walk, available upon request, which was the more important part for me, because it took me on paths like those I used to walk on with my grandfather. I had found out about him being an officer of the guard at the factory only a few years ago, when I found a photo of him in the uniform of an officer of the Wehrmacht. I had thought he hadn't been in the war. In my family it was not spoken about, at least not in front of me. I asked an aunt, the last one alive who was able to tell me what little she knew about it. She was a young girl at the time.

Here we found the ruins I remembered from my childhood and adolescence that I had always taken for bombed out bunkers. Now I learnt they were workshops for presses, turning lathes, transfer stations, ammunition storehouses, blown up a few years after the war...

For many years now I have been practicing, through breathing, to let go of things my body holds onto with involuntary tension. Breathing is regulated by the same autonomous part of the nervous system as the tone of our tissues, the involuntary tension of our muscles. Breathing out is a movement of relaxation; here the muscles that have done the work of breathing in let go. If you give yourself a little bit of time to feel how you rest inwards and towards the ground, you can feel how the ground supports your innermost being; that means, you can rest within the depth of the lving being you are and in the material world we all are a part of.

That is how I discovered the tracks of history in my body, because when I manage to let go a bit of involuntary tension, information comes to the surface. You only have to learn how to understand this information and find its context. When you hit home, the tension is released. It is as if the body held onto memories and sensations that want to be known and acknowledged. When the message is delivered, the messenger can rest. It can then be included in conscious experience and it becomes possible to draw conclusions, recognize contexts, understand the behaviors of others as well as one's own, take care of things that have been waiting to be taken care of, sometimes for generations, for solutions to be found or, at least, acknowledgement to be given.

We didn't talk much, when my grandfather took me along on his walks on this site. I was 5, 6, 7 years old. The bad feeling in my tummy was always there. It would never have occurred to me to relate it to him or anybody else. I thought it was something in me that was not as it should be. But I did not dare tell anyone about it. I simply did my best to be like what I thought to be normal.

When I try to imagine how people must have felt back then, when gun powder was manufactured on that site, people who worked there deliberately, happy to be able to make a living, and other who worked there as forced labor, captured in occupied territories, I am certain that efforts to dominate feelings leading to knots or fists in people's stomachs were a common occurrance. I cannot really imagine what it must have been like for my grandfather to be a guard  there. I have seen documentaries and movies about the two great wars and the Third Reich. When I put what I saw on the screen together with the silence weighing tons on my childhood and adolescence, I get a glimpse of the things nobody wanted to talk about. It is no wonder my grandfather did not want to tell a little girl anything about all that. It is no wonder nobody wanted to think about it and that everybody wanted to leave it behind the sooner the better and orient towards the future.

But how can you build a future without assimilating what happened? How can you assimilate something you do not want to talk about or even think about? The more people strive to push something outside their awareness, the tension they use to do so holds it back. Even though it may be true that they no longer experience it directly, underneath the threshold of consciousness it keeps on smoldering. People have made an effort to dominate what they feel and have managed to get over the horror. They believe they have left it behind. But the truth is they carry it around with them at all times. Since they no longer recognize it as something of their own, they only see its shadow fall on others. The stuff one does not tolerate in oneself gets projected onto others.

Little children are highly sensitive. They feel even the things adults have tried to get over by pulling themselves together, what they try to cover by overeating, what they try to drown in alcohol or strive to anesthesize by other means. Children feel it in their own bodies, without the least possibility of understanding that what they are feeling, actually, are sensations their parents or other adults in their environment cannot bear. The truth is that we all are as sensitive, not only children. Think about sometime when you stood next to someone who was angry or sad or afraid. We actually do feel it in our own bodies. It is called empathy. Some people may have more of it than others. Personally, I believe that some people allow themselves to be more empathetic than others. There are people who simply cannot bear feeling themselves, much less others.

The fist in my stomach has let go quite a bit. The week after my trip to Germany was pretty stressful, but there was no trace of any knot in my stomach. I was actually amazingly at ease about a couple of things that would at other times have made me quite nervous. I believe I managed to leave a fair amount of the old tension from my childhood in that forest or, at least, the way it manifests has changed.

Thanks to the Förderkreises für ein Industriemuseum Geesthacht many buildings in Geesthacht are now protected as historic monuments and many of the documents that have not been destroyed are being collected. The creation of this museum seems quite important. For many people it is an unpleasant subject they do not want to remember. That is probably why it is so difficult to convince the competent public administration and, in the case of the dynamite factory in Krümmel, the Swedish company Vattenfall, to restore the old water tower as the site for this museum before any more gets lost. Even though it is an explosive and probably also embarrasing subject, it is especially important to keep the memory alive, because what people do not want to remember, they repeat.

To manage the flow of emotions that come to the fore during the process of discovering a blind spot and zeroing in on it is something that can be learnt. When they remain in the body underneath the threshold of consciousness, they keep on smoldering until they become a source of illness. Even when they have already become manifest as symptoms, it is healing and a relief to be able to leave the emotions we absorbed from earlier generations through sensations directly from body to body, mind to mind, with the people they belong to. When seen in the greater context of one's personal and collective historical background, these sensations help to understand many things in another way and end up quieting down.

It is not about blaming others for one's own feelings nor about rejecting one's own responsibility. Quite to the contrary, it is about taking the reins of one's own life and about assimilating what is in our power to assimilate, whether it is our own sensations or those absorbed from others. It is about learning to distinguish one from the other. Sensations have the function of getting our attention with respect to our wants and needs and their degree of satisfaction. The satisfaction of egotistic desires and needs, at best, bring about momentary relief and feeling of satisfaction. The only thing that really does the job is the truth that wants to be known. The truth is that every living being belongs to the same family. What is harmful for others, creates suffering. What is good for everybody, creates wellbeing.

Even though this lamp post no longer gives any light, may the light of consciousness illuminate the actions of human beings so that the manufacture of arms and ammunitions and all kinds of harmful products be ended right now in the whole world! Trees generate the oxygen we need to breathe. Many people create things we need to live well. Let us all act in such a way that it helps others to also live well, so that we can all be well together!

Tension, Water and the Tracks of History

en español aquí                                                        hier auf deutsch
The last days of August… the poster about the excess of involuntary tensions and the water that keeps the tissues of our bodies supple and elastic is at the graphic designer’s… the exploration of the tracks of history in the body last weekend revealed to the participants roots that penetrate deeply into the Earth, nourish body and soul and help them to approach matters, personal and ancestral, that are awaiting some kind of resolution, and to let go of others that really are none of their business.

Before I go to Washington on September 17 to present my poster at the Fascia Research Congress, I will go to my home town in northern Germany, Geesthacht, to participate in a historical walk through the terrains of the gun powder factory that was there until 1945. The title: “German Gun Powder for the World”. It is organized by an organization for the promotion of an industry museum in Geesthacht, which I am a member of.

I am following some tracks that history has left in my body. A few years ago I discovered that my grandfather had been an official in the guard of this factory. It wasn’t voluntary. If he had refused, he would probably have been court martialed and executed for high treason. But until recently I hadn’t known anything about all this. I had seen the photo of him in his uniform some time before, but I didn’t know anything about his participation in the war, or rather, I had been under the impression that he hadn’t actually participated. It had been a blind spot. Luckily an aunt, based on some childhood recollections, was able to tell me why my grandfather was wearing that uniform.

From there on I started to understand a number of things that had happened in my family within a wider context and an image began to take shape, like when the pieces of a puzzle fall into place. I had often walked with my grandfather in the forest where the factory had been hidden. I don’t remember him ever telling me anything about the bombed out bunkers we saw there nor about any experience he had had on those very same paths some years earlier. Anyway, I was much more interested in the names of that tree, this herb, that bird… These things he did tell me. Probably I did not ask about the others because I felt that I would touch on something he was not willing to talk about. What I remember more than anything is the silence that was between us. It was not a comfortable silence. But that I didn’t know at the time. It was normal. It was a silence that was weighing tons.

As a matter of fact, as soon as I could I hit the road and went 800 km away to study applied linguistic sciences and, once I had finished my studies, 2000 km away. I needed distance to gain a perspective… and another profession that would help me to understand what was going on between me, my family, my country, and the world. It is thanks to this profession as a practitioner of the Duggan/French Approach (DFA) to Somatic Pattern Recognition that I am able to recognize the fist I can still feel right now in my stomach as the same fist my grandfather used to hold in and compress to the smallest dimension possible all the feeling he could not allow himself to feel as the guard of the forced labor of people who had been captured in the occupied countries and others who were inmates in the near-by concentration camp who were working there to manufacture the gun powder that was killing and injuring people all over the world. The powerlessness facing abuse and injustice traumatize a witness, probably not in the same way as the victim, but in a manner that is as lasting. And if it is not tended to effectively, it will become breeding ground for repetition.

The same is true in the realm of family life. The little girl, who sees her father beating up her brother and her mother too afraid to protect her son from her husband’s violence, feels the same kind of powerlessness and terror as any person facing the violence of organized terrorism of any kind: perpetrated by a state, fundamentalist groups, economic organizations, criminals, as extra-parliamentary opposition, on TV, in the movies, by children in school who have become bullies following the unresolved traumas of their elders and ancestors, or colleagues who mob others at the work place.

Fifty refugees dead in a freezer truck, twenty suffocated in the cargo space of a ship, shipwrecks almost every day, thousands of refugees day by day… It is another war; it is other people who make it. But is it really another war, is it other people? I don’t believe anybody can watch the news without feeling the same fist in their stomach as my grandfather in the attempt to give as little space as possible to the feelings of powerlessness and terror facing the escalation of suffering manifest in all those people. It is in the nature of the living beings we are to be receptive for the emotional state of others. We are compassionate, gentle and supportive by nature. If people do not feel these things, it is because without knowing it they are tightening their muscles to interrupt the flow of sensations they do not tolerate. Underneath the threshold of consciousness the fear of these sensations grows and breeds more violence, more victims.

What can we do? No matter how powerless I feel facing all this, what I do know how to do is to relate to this fist:

-    Moment to moment, I try to find the position of my body where I can feel the ground underneath the fist so as to be able to show it that it is possible to be supported by a greater force (gravity, the force field of Mother Earth).

-    Following the direction of the exhale, I go into the tightest place within the fist and rest there in order to take in, without fear or resistance, the support of the ground which is available at all times, even in this tight place where a multitude of difficult feelings is crowded and compressed, so I can let them flow, one by one, and leave space for the next thing to come up.

-    With the support of the ground, I wait there for the movement of the inhale to begin in this place and expand it.

-    I give time to this movement of expansion during the inhale until I feel that it expands my whole body, from the tightest place within the fist all the way to the surface, from head to toe, in both sides and in the back as much as in the front.

-    As I let the air go again, I surrender my weight to the ground, the weight of my body as well as the weight of anything weighing me down… resting, once again, in the tightest spot within the fist, which by now already is a little bit less tight… and feeling the powerlessness facing the magnitude of the suffering, the anger with all those who create it out of ignorance and the terror facing their violence, because these are the things I need to let go. The powerlessness, the suffering, the anger, the ignorance, the terror and the violence, all these feeling I also have in me, and I can let go of them only if I feel them. Because, if I were to not feel them, how could I know what I have to let go of?

-    In communication with the Earth underneath my feet and my chair and the space around me that extends all the way through the whole universe, together with the air I exhale, I send out my wish that those who create the suffering of all these people become aware of the fact that they are hurting not only others but also themselves and that they stop doing it.

-    I put my being, my talents and my skills at the service of life in all its beauty to help create a world where every living being can enjoy the beauty of life to its fullest.

When I’ll be in Geesthacht in a couple of weeks, I would like to have the opportunity to find out what kind of effect it had to work deliberately in the gun powder factory, in terms of health of the workers themselves as well as their families. I have good health because in my adult life I have made sure to research in order to understand any discomfort and find out what I needed as a remedy, whenever it made itself felt. Now, in retrospective, I can see that many of my discomforts had their roots in the family situation caused by my grandfather’s emotional state within the context of the traumas caused by two world wars, the insanity of the regime and his participation in the manufacture of harmful substances. He was forced to participate. What must it have been like for those who were happy to have work and be able to sustain their families by manufacturing the gun powder that killed and injured so many people all over the world? As for my own health, if it hadn’t been for the inner work I did during all those years, I am sure that at this point I would be dead or very sick. And here I am: happy, grateful and enjoying good health.

The project of the poster about the excess of involuntary tensions and the water that keeps the tissues of our bodies supple and elastic will end on Tuesday, September 6, https://goteo.org/project/cristal-liquido?lang=en. After that day it will no longer be possible to make any contributions. But the page itself will remain open and accessible to anyone wishing to consult or make use of the materials I had the opportunity to elaborate for this project during the months of June, July and August, except for some images which I will have to withdraw after September 6.

I thank you for your interest and support!

Sincerely,
Brigitte Hansmann

The traces of history in one’s own body

en español aquí                                               auf deutsch hier

Why do human beings repeat things we were sure we would do differently from how our predecessors did them? Why do so many German citizens fall into the same behavior that stages, once again, probably the darkest episode of German history in the 20th century, namely putting the blame for one’s discomfort on a scapegoat?  I write about Germany because I am German, but people from all nationalities fall into the repetition of unconscious collective dynamics, unless they deliberately work on becoming aware of their patterns.

Foto © 2005 Olof von Randow
It is not easy to look inside and face the sensations taking place in there. Much more difficult still it is when these sensations have been adopted from previous generations. For people who lived during the two world wars and the Third Reich, the first priority was to survive, and then, to leave the horror behind as soon as possible. One overcomes many things, wraps them in silence and life goes on. But these things leave traces behind that become symptoms and disease and self/destructive behaviors, as long as they are not recognized and led on towards an effective treatment and/or action.

Repressed posttraumatic stress and denied shame and guilt after World War I created the conditions for the Third Reich and the Second World War. Those who couldn’t tolerate a pound of guilt, then, had to deal with a ton of it. When shame and guilt are repressed and projected onto a scapegoat, they increase and the risk of repeating the repressed dynamic grows exponentially. Human beings repeat what we do not want to remember.

If someone is ashamed for something bad s/he has done, that is healthy, because it leads the person to want to correct their mistake.  But when one is ashamed for what one is, that is toxic, very unhealthy. What an adult represses through involuntary muscle tension, striving to keep it underneath the threshold of conscious experience, a child feels directly in his or her own body. Children have no way of understanding that really they perceive in their own body sensations their parents or grandparents cannot tolerate. All they know is that it is very unpleasant and even threatening. Since those sensations take place in one’s own body, it seems as if they belong to what one is. Therefore also this generation is going to strive as much as they can to keep those sensations outside their conscious experience. The consequences: symptoms, disease, self/destructive behaviors, etc., generation after generation.

This is how people who had not even been born at the time of the events, carry the traces of the shame and guilt of them in their bodies. Generally, nobody wants to have anything to do with this whole history. Some even believe they have the right to judge their predecessors. After all, they did not participate in the events! And people who were children during the Third Reich can hardly be considered guilty of what happened.
But those who were born in Germany, particularly those of German parents, belong to the German people irrevocably.  This does not change as long as one lives. The more defensive one may be about the implications derived from belonging to one’s people, the more power they will gain over the person. Apart from unresolved trauma, genetically transmitted, during the first years of life many things are directly transmitted body to body, mind to mind through sensations. What adults push outside their awareness through the tension of their muscles, children adopt in the very same shape. They grow up being defensive about something without knowing what it is, or even knowing that they are being defensive or repressing anything. After all, it is normal, as it has always been.

This kind of sensations can be found underneath the threshold of consciousness in a great part of humanity battered by wars and violence, and especially also the German people, and most of the time they are being projected outside onto others. It is possible to gain access to these sensations and to learn how to leave the emotional charge that has been adopted from previous generations where they belong in order to be able to deal with the things that actually do belong to one’s present experience.

In the second half of life, at the latest, the things that were sacrificed –unknowingly- in order to conquer a place in the world begin to make themselves felt. Children cannot do anything else but to love and tune completely into the resonance of their family environment. This may mean that a true loving exchange may be impossible, when parents and grandparents are traumatized, ashamed to death due to the collective guilt and their organism automatically overrides the intolerable sensations. Loving care becomes a duty that is fulfilled, not because there is no love, but because the love there is cannot flow.

Some people are chosen by life and the fact that something is off comes to their attention earlier. Sometimes symptoms of disease make it impossible to continue on the same course one was on. It may be self/destructive tendencies like addictions (including the addiction to work), violence and abuse of power and also its reverse, the attitude of the powerless victim. Few people understand that these may be traces of collective history. Everybody has the history of their family, their country and all of humanity in them, even the history of the origin of life and the universe itself, and can find new life and new understanding in it.

Development always occurs in stages, step by step. Sometimes it may be possible to take a big step, others are tiny little baby steps, but each step is important. If we want to spare one, we stumble. If we do not take into account the heritage of our predecessors, we will run into it at the next corner. We may put the blame on others, but that will not bring us any closer to a solution of the problem. Quite to the contrary!

Each person’s body is a part of their country and their people. Everyone can learn to tune their own body into the greater force fields of the world. While we are defensive, even if it is against injustice, exploitation and violence, we are focused on these things and under their effect. But if we align our body in relationship with the coordinates of the gravitational field of Earth, we gain stability and strength, because anything we do then will be done with the support of the whole planet.

While our behavior is determined by unconscious patterns developed partly by ourselves and partly adopted from our direct environment, it is as if we were possessed and incapable of clear thought. But if we recognize these patterns, we can work with what is really our own and find ways to leave the old stories where they belong, where we can see them and learn from them.

I admit that this is not an easy task. But it protects and cares for one’s health in body and mind as well as for the health of society, humanity and nature in general.

In the depth of one’s body one can find the traces of history that are getting in the way of individual and collective development and put them at the service of developing effective alternatives.

Participants in the workshop explore their patterns through the regular movements of living: breathing, lying, sitting, standing, walking and communicating, individually in guided sequences and explorations with a partner, in small groups and the whole group. The theoretical part provides the necessary information to understand the mechanisms of trauma and the patterns that come into being around them and to discover how they manifest in the relationship between the body and the gravitational field of Earth.

The format of the workshop provides experiences and knowledge of added value to professional in the field of physical and psychological health, education, the arts, enterprise, sports and many others, but it does not require any prior training. One essential requirement is the willingness to develop a certain degree of sensitivity that makes it possible to perceive sensations in the body, independently of whether they are pleasant or painful, and to learn to manage their flow efficiently in order to be able to attend to the parts of oneself that are trapped in the conflict with the greater force fields of the world. The workshop provides the tools to develop this kind of sensitivity, even if participants have invested much energy in making themselves insensitive and do not know how to perceive their body.

Four days to go - La recta final – 4 días

Public health would be better if health care followed this project of preventive medicine and pain treatment without undesirable side effects. Life quality would be much better for so many people. Relationships between people would be better. Communication between social agents and society in general would be better. And all this through paying attention to a few very simple details, that are available for free, within reach for everybody. All that needs to be done is to learn how to let go of some unnecessary tensions and deal with a few issues that have been waiting patiently inside for their turn. If it were easy, people would be doing it already. But it doesn’t matter that it is not easy. What matters is that it is possible! And highly gratifying!
There is only four more days to go: Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, to reach the minimum amount for this project to pull through. We have reached 54%! And this under the present circumstances of heat wave, political and economic unrest und whatever!
I feel most grateful and touched. And I have hope that we will still be able to make it. It occurred late to me to offer the possibility of sponsorship to companies in exchange for a workshop for their employees or for their clients within the context of a publicity campaign. The amount co-financed can be written off entirely. Please ask any entrepreneur in your environment to sponsor my project. Like this with one or two contributions we would hit the minimum mark. But of course any contribution, no matter how small, will be welcome and much appreciated!
Thank you very much for participating in this project!

Release the tension you don't need

This little video proposes that the water in our bodies absorbs energy generated by habitual tension of muscles and connective tissues that shapes our bodies and patterns of movement and behavior and shows how to release the tension we don’t need.

The goteo comapaign has generated almost 1000€ at this point. Many thousand thanks to the donors! And to everybody who has helped to spread the word.
The days are going by fast and we need another 1840€ to reach the minimum. If we don't get there, all the money donated so far will go back to the donors.
Please visit https://goteo.org/project/cristal-liquido# to check out the project if you have don't so yet.
